House in Shankill 2014
Our clients, a family with young children, bought this semi-detached house in the Shankill area. The house was single storey with dormer to the front, and two storey to the rear. It was in very poor condition and required a complete renovation & extension to bring it up to modern standards, and to cater for the needs of our clients’ family.
Working closely with our clients, the house was designed to incorporate some noteworthy features: The entrance hall is now a double-height galleried space which is flooded with sunlight from three south-facing Velux roof-lights. A new large kitchen/dining/living space has been provided to the rear of the original house: This is a bright space which is at the heart of the house, and has a wood-burning stove, and generously-proportioned space to cater for the family cooking, dining and relaxing. The mono-pitched roof is directed towards the public park adjoining the house to the east, and a tall window views through the trees on the boundary to the park beyond. A large sliding glass door connects the front living room with this new space to the rear, and there are also glazed doors to the hall so that there is an open flow of space throughout the ground floor of the house. The remainder of the house has been renovated and externally insulated and the internal layout reconfigured to provide a comfortable 4 bedroom family home.
The original gross internal floor area was 113 sq. m: 17 sq. m. was demolished and an additional 100 sq. m. was constructed to give a finished house almost double the original area of 196 sq. m. (2,110 sq. ft.).
