Capital of Culture
European Capital of Culture
Keogan Architects were invited to propose a project for Cork 2005, when the city enjoyed European Capital of Culture designation. We proposed that the 18 Turns Pavilion, designed by Daniel Libeskind with ARUP, originally commissioned as a temporary Summer Pavilion by the Serpentine Galley in Hyde Park in London, be loaned to the city of Cork.
We approached the owner who agreed to loan the pavilion: We assembled all the original project stakeholders including Daniel Libeskind’s office, ARUP Associates and the specialist fabricators, Sheetfabs of Nottingham. Having considered various sites in Cork, all project stakeholders were of the view that locating the Pavilion at Fota House represented the best solution.
Keogan Architects project managed the transportation and re-erection of the Pavilion at Fota House where, apart from its intrinsic value and interest, it also became a venue for events ranging from Chamber Music to Poetry Readings during 2005. It was a great privilege to welcome Daniel Libeskind to Cork; to “reintroduce” him to his 18 Turns Pavilion, and to hear him deliver a lecture in a packed Cork Opera House.
